The Flannel Workshirt

Flannel materials have been crafted since the 17th century, originally made from carded wool or worsted yarn. Around the 19th century, flannel was made particularly in British towns such as Newtown and Montgomeryshire to protect Welsh farmers from the cold. By the 1800′s flannel spread widely throughout Europe due to the growing number of “carding mills”, which handled the preparation of wool for spinning into a usable fabric.
The more modern introduction of the flannel happened in the early 1900s, mutually worn by blue collar workers in America, as companies began spinning wool more finely to create a more lighter shirt. This allowed for warmth, but also a free range of motion. Grunge bands also played a role in the increased popularity of flannel in America, specifically in a plaid design in the 1990s.

Versatility is a quality that flannel does exceptionally well. Found in anything from suits, sweaters, to even shirts. Flannel shirts, however, are more than suitable for those days where the job of warmth needs to be done properly while also remaining convenient. Whether on a Winter hike, trip to the river, or casual day out, a flannel works well in many occasions. Personally enjoying the meditative serenity of the great outdoors while exploring the nearby national forest, distant from the overhwelming noise of the city. Trips such as these make for an enlightening experience. Surrounded by uncharted territory, the inescapable sound of the rushing water, and a whistling breeze accompanied by the sound of birds is enough to clear the mind. It is necessary to bring a token of the experience home as a reminder. (Press

TOOLS FOR THE HUNT
The exploration of outerwear is expected during the Fall & Winter seasons, and with well reason. A hunting jacket, like many other field-type jackets is on the heavier side, this one lined with fleece to combat the harsh cold. After some searching, I found myself the lone bidder on a humble $5 eBay auction for this jacket. When looking for bargains, thrifting is one valuable resource, but eBay is a great alternative to hunt, carrying some surprisingly inexpensive and unique pieces from time to time. And when speaking of time, what better way to keep it than a vintage field watch. Perhaps one with a compass would have been more suitable for this sort of undertaking.
A CERTAIN SIMPLICITY
Enjoying the innocence of the outdoors becomes possible with a personal, yet functional wardrobe. In this case a henley works well as an undershirt in alternative to the ever common t-shirt. Essentially crafted for life under strenuous conditions, a pair of sturdy flat-front chinos give a sense of assurance against the environment’s unknown conditions. Similarly, a reusable cloth doubles as a pocket square and can also be of important use. This one particularly made from a pair of surplus camoflauge trousers.
