Thrifting For Dummies
- Uncategorized
And I mean “dummy” in the most intelligent way possible. Shall we say “ill-informed”? It’s really in reference to the “____ For Dummies” guide books which explain different subjects in lamens terms. Which is what I plan to do in this post about thrifting. Now for those who haven’t yet discovered thrifting, it’s basically a process of buying clothing/accessories at very low prices, from vintage or donation thrift stores. Some of the majorly visited include “The Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc.” Those work, but in my past experiences, I have seen the prices have started to increase.
Where to look?
To find a thrift store near you, I would recommend browsing the yellow pages, or an online search engine. You want to search places using “vintage” or “thrift” as keywords.
What is the price range?
Once you have found a shop in your area, you should then give them a call and ask about their price range. Most thrift stores keep prices under $10, and go as low as even 99 cents! In my experience, I have seen $2-5 as the average for just about anything (shirts, jeans, etc.) Shoes on the other hand will be a bit more perhaps $5-15 depending.
How do I know they’ll have my style?
You won’t. But if you style is vintage, this is the place for you. The point of the matter is these are very cheap clothing and can be used for many different stylings. It’s best to visit one and see what they have.
Should I bring a list?
The best idea in my opinion is to go with an open mind. A list will only constrict you, as you try and search for the exact items you have listed. It only leaves you bummed when you don’t find anything you planned. I had no idea what I was going there for today, in fact I was only going to look after a friend recommended me to check this particular store, only to find great items at lower prices than expected.
Colors?
I wouldn’t try to dress in anything else than what feels comfortable to you. Just be as creative as you’d like. I recommend grabbing anything that catches your eye, and going to an open area in the store to arrange possible looks etc. Remember what you have in your own closet. Mixing and matching always works!
Remember to wash any clothes you have purchased if shopping from a 2nd hand thrift shop.
Here was my thrifting haul for today. I spent about $21 for this, which easily could’ve translated into much more at a department store. The main cost flux was due to the 2 blazers, each a very modest $8 in price!
This deep red colored long sleeve was only $1.98!

August 18, 2011Love your website. Very informative. I see you are in SoCal, so you MUST go to Los Angeles proper to thrift at times I’m sure. Can you tell me which vintage/thrift stores in L.A. you like?
Thank you,
